Supporting Young Minds Isle of Wight

This project is an important opportunity for the culture and youth engagement sectors on the Island to better understand and develop the potential of creative activity in supporting the resilience of young people at risk in terms of mental health.

SYM  Isle of Wight is one of a suite of regional projects receiving grant-funding from Artswork. On the Island our project is working with 2 groups of young people in Sandown (facilitated by IW Community Action community resilience team) and Newport (Independent Arts) who are each designing a brief for creative interventions that will bring the reflective qualities of environment and biosphere into their own neighbourhoods in ways that make sense for their own needs and aspirations. Creative practitioners will be invited to respond to these briefs over the summer and selected by young people representatives in a ‘dragon’s den style’ format. Successful practitioners will work with the groups to transform their collective ideas into reality, working towards Arts Award qualifications at the same time. During the project, Artswork will deliver CPD training opportunities around how cultural and youth professionals can use creativity as an impactful tool in supporting young minds on the Island. Evaluation and learning from this project will feed into a wider evidence-building report and into resources for future use by practitioners from across sectors, individually and in collaboration.

With the generous support of Artswork, and subject to securing additional match-funding, we have an opportunity to extend this project into work with an additional 2 ‘young people at risk’ engagement groups on the Island, provisionally in the Ryde and Ventnor areas.
